Rachel Mercer Class of 2011 College of Arts and Sciences, Graphic Design and Multimedia studies
Rachel Mercer has dabbled in pretty much anything and everything tech, internet and design-related. The third year honor student is working toward a dual major in Graphic Design and Multimedia Studies and is on co-op at AIGA Designs, where she enjoys having the creative freedom to work on several large-scale graphic design projects for the agency.
“It was important that I went to a school where I felt I could rise to my full potential as a graphic designer. The co-op program was incredibly appealing, especially after speaking with several friends in the industry about the job search process and challenges they’ve faced,” says Rachel.
Aside from her social and academic engagements at Northeastern, Rachel still finds the time to work on her designs, organize various ROFLCon events, volunteer as a teacher assistant and lab monitor, DJ on WRBB Radio, and experiment with new software – all while fervently typing Twitter updates.
Rachel recently worked in a 24-hour hack-a-thon, where a small group of friends, consisting of a team of programmers, designers, and social media experts from colleges in the New England area, worked over a period of 24 hours to come up with an idea for a new site, and build it. The result of this development session is called YawnLog.com, a site which tracks your sleeping trends and calculates a sleep debt.
In addition, Rachel is interested in studying trends on what becomes popular on the internet and is in the process of developing and launching a high-quality geek apparel line via online retail.
