Last week I had the opportunity to travel abroad to visit our two NUin sites in London, England and Thessaloniki, Greece. I had a wonderful time catching up with our staff at each location and meeting the NUin student participants who are already taking advantage of Northeastern’s experiential learning and global opportunities prior to enrolling in the spring semester.
NUin is a program developed four years ago for students who are admitted to Northeastern’s Jan Start Program. Students have the opportunity to spend their first semester of college abroad at one of two sites living, studying and learning about another culture prior to officially enrolling at Northeastern in January. Student earn up to 17 credits while they have life changing experiences. Over the last several years, more than 300 students have decided to take advantage of this opportunity and this year 140 students are having the experience of a lifetime.
In addition to taking classes and traveling, NUin participants also have the opportunity to get involved in community service projects. Engaging with the community provides a deeper understanding of the culture in which they are living and enables student to meet local residents. Pictured below is a student from the NUin Greece program. She is currently taking classes at the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) and also volunteers at a center for children with disabilities.
Whenever I travel abroad, I always take the opportunity to connect with alumni and current Northeastern students on co-op or studying abroad. While visiting the NUin students at the Foundation for International Education (FIE) in London, England, several Northeastern students were able to join us for dinner at a local pub. Each of the students I met had a remarkable story to tell! Three of the students in the picture below are participating in a study abroad program at a UK university while also working part-time at the British Parliament. Another student is on co-op at Turner Broadcasting System, home to popular cable news and entertainment network. Her particular assignment involves making commercials for the Cartoon Network. One student is a co-op at Goldman Sachs, another is doing research at Imperial College and was recently accepting into a Doctoral program at Cornell, and another is one of our Presidential Global Scholars on co-op at a market research firm. We enjoyed traditional English Pub food while they shared amazing stories about their experiences in London. Just a typical day for Northeastern students!
At Northeastern, we are serious about providing global opportunities for our students! Thanks to all of our wonderful students and NUin staff that help support these programs. For those students that have the opportunity come to Northeastern through the Jan Start Program, keep in mind that NUin is a great option for the fall. Until next time…
